Who Installs a Home Sauna? Delivery, Assembly and the Electrician Question

"Do you install it?" is the question, but it is really three questions wearing one coat. Getting a heavy pallet off a truck, assembling the cabin, and supplying power are separate jobs with separate answers, and mixing them together is why the topic feels murkier than it is.

• Delivery is freight, and curbside means the curb. The driver brings it to the end of your driveway on a lift gate. Moving it from there is on you or on whoever you hire.
• Assembly on most indoor cabins needs no contractor and no tools. They are clasp-together panel systems. Our own guidance is 2 to 3 hours with one helper.
• Electrical is the only part that can require a licensed pro, and the model decides it. Of the 143 saunas we carry, 69 specify a standard 120V household circuit and 47 specify 240V, which means an electrician.
• We do not send an install crew as standard. White glove in home installation is available on request for some products and is quoted at the time of order.

Saunas ship by LTL freight on a pallet, not by parcel carrier. The freight company calls to schedule a window, the truck arrives with a lift gate, and the pallet comes down to ground level at the end of your driveway. That is what free curbside delivery covers, and it is where the carrier's job ends.

The weights are the part people underestimate. Thirty of our saunas publish a shipping weight, and the range runs from 300 lbs on the Dynamic Barcelona, which is the lightest thing we sell, up to 1,385 lbs on the Golden Designs Savonlinna 3-Person Outdoor Traditional. Eleven of those thirty are 500 lbs or more.

What makes that manageable is that the pallet is not one object. Cabins ship broken down into panels in multiple boxes: the Cardoba Elite arrives in 2 boxes, the Bergamo Elite 4-Person and the Hemming Elite Corner arrive in 3. Nobody is carrying 350 lbs. Two people are carrying a series of panels, the heaviest of which is usually the floor or the roof.

Two things worth planning before the truck arrives. First, measure the path, not just the room, because a panel that fits the destination can still fail at a stairwell turn or a 30 inch doorway. This is the part that surprises people in a good way. Most indoor infrared cabins are not built, they are clicked together. 23 of our 143 saunas describe clasp-together panel construction on the page, and 19 of them publish a dedicated Assembly spec, every one of which reads "Clasp-together (no tools needed)" verbatim. The Barcelona and the Cardoba Elite are both in that group.

The sequence is the same across the range. Floor down, back and side walls stood up and clasped, front wall with the glass door, bench modules in, roof on, then the wiring harnesses between panels click into place. Once that is done the cabin is an appliance, and 7 of our saunas describe themselves as plug and play from that point.

Our published guidance for indoor products is 2 to 3 hours with one helper and no special tools. The helper is not optional in practice. Panels are not heavy individually but they are large and awkward, and holding one upright while you clasp the next is a two person motion.

What you do not need for these: a contractor, a permit for the cabin itself, framing, plumbing, or a dedicated room. An infrared cabin is a freestanding appliance that sits on a finished floor.

Here is the whole thing in one table. We classified all 143 saunas in the catalog by the electrical spec published on the product page. The 12 heater and component listings are excluded because they are parts, not cabins.

Those three numbers add to 143, which is the whole catalog, so nothing is hidden in a rounding gap. The 27 with no published spec are mostly outdoor and kit style saunas where the stove is chosen separately, and that is exactly why the number is not published at the cabin level.

The pattern that matters to a budget is this. 62 of the 69 that run on 120V cost under $5,000. On the other side, only 2 of the 47 that need 240V sit under $5,000, and the cheapest of them is $4,999. Below $5,000 the catalog is overwhelmingly plug it in. Above it, assume a circuit.

Two things this does not tell you, and we would rather say so than round them off. A 120V spec does not always mean any outlet will do, because some models call for a dedicated 20A circuit with nothing else on it, and a few specify a non-GFCI receptacle. And a 240V spec is a requirement, not an estimate of cost, which varies with the distance from your panel. Everything above describes the common case, which is an indoor infrared cabin. Two other categories change the answer, and both change it toward more trade involvement rather than less.

Indoor traditional steam saunas. All 8 of the models we carry, from $5,999 to $8,499, specify a dedicated 240V circuit installed by an electrician, and the two 6-person models specify 240V at 40 amps. Outdoor kits. These are the ones where the word installation is genuinely earned. An outdoor sauna is a small building. It needs a level, load bearing base you provide before it arrives, and the larger kits ship on a flat bed truck rather than a standard lift gate delivery. Our largest, the SaunaLife Model G11 8-Person 2-Room kit at $16,980, ships palleted on a flat bed. Assembly on kits of that scale is a build, not an afternoon, and most buyers hire a contractor or a handyman crew for it.

If you are looking at traditional steam or an outdoor kit, budget for a licensed electrician as part of the project rather than as a surprise.
